2008-09 SEASON RECAP: The University of Minnesota women’s golf program has fielded teams every year since 1975, or for 33 seasons. The 2008-09 Gophers were, statistically, the best the program has seen.
Minnesota averaged a combined score of 311.4 for a stroke average of 77.85, the lowest season average in school history. The previous low was established by the 1987-88 team with a season average 77.97.
Individually, Teresa Puga established the lowest fall season scoring average of 74.07 and recorded a 77.78 in the spring which is the 13th lowest in program history during the spring season. For the season, Puga averaged 76.28, the second-lowest average in a season for the Gophers. Kate Hughes, arguably the best player in school history, holds the record with an average of 75.51.
Then senior Paige Bromen played in four tournaments during the fall schedule and finished with a stroke average of 76.9, the program’s 12th best fall average. Also, Bromen, Mary Narzisi and Michele Edlin recorded season averages of 79.38, 79.5 and 79.62, respectively, which is just outside the school’s top 23 in season average. Edlin and Narzisi’s fall averages of 77.5 and 77.9 almost made the school’s list as well, falling percentage points away from Tai Kinney’s 2001 fall average of 77.41.
As a team, the Gophers finished in the top 10 in eight of the team’s 10 regular season tournaments this season, five of which were also top-five finishes. Individually, Minnesota’s roster included seven players that hold season averages under 80.
Minnesota worst finish of the 2008-09 season was a 16th place finish at the Las Vegas Invitational, however, the team’s 54-hole score of 885 is the lowest 54-hole tournament is program history.
THE GOPHERS: The Golden Gophers return five players with collegiate golf experience for the 2009-10 season. Four of the five will be in the lineup this weekend for the Gophers: juniors Mary Narzisi, Teresa Puga and Michele Edlin as well as senior Christine Herzog.
