Gophers Close Strong, Finish in 7th Place

Minnesota opened the 2009-10 season today (Sept. 13) with a 7th place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State at Forest Akers West golf course. Completing the tournament with a weekend-best 303 as a team, Minnesota jumped up two spots in the team rankings in the final stanza. For the weekend, Minnesota bettered itself each round to put up a +54 effort (310-305-303).
The Gophers finished two shots behind sixth place Michigan, who produced a 297 on the third day to inch past Minnesota. Michigan State won the Mary Fossum with a score of +11, followed by Purdue, Indiana and Northwestern respectively.
Individually, Junior Teresa Puga held the top spot for Minnesota with a +9 (225) for the tournament, finishing tied for 16th overall. Puga paced the Gopher effort Sunday by shooting 73 in the tournament’s final round.
Freshman Jackie Sheperd made an impressive collegiate debut by tying for second among Gophers with a +14 effort (78-76-76). Tying Sheperd was Junior Michele Edlin (79-75-76). Fellow junior Mary Narzisi and senior Christine Herzog each finished in a tie for 50th place.
Michigan State placed four golfers among the top 10 this weekend with Shannon Warner and Lindsey Solberg leading the Spartans with even par for the tournament.
