Duwell Wins Big Ten Honor

Minnesota senior Megan Duwell was named the Big Ten Co-Cross Country Runner of the Week after defending her individual title in the Oz Memorial Run on Friday. Duwell ran an impressive 21 minutes 13.24 seconds, beating the 6-kilometer race's second place finisher by 53 seconds and leading her teammates to a first-place team finish. This is Duwell's first weekly honor; she was named an All-American last year.

Duwell's award is the first time a Gopher has been Runner of the Week since 2005. Minnesota's Emily Brown received the honor in September, 2005, and her team went on to finish ninth at the NCAA Championships. In the time between Brown and Duwell's awards Minnesota has won two Big Ten Championships and has placed 12th or higher at the NCAA Championships in three appearances.

"I was surprised to find out that we had not won a Big Ten weekly award for such a long time, considering the caliber of the teams we've had here in recent years. Megan has been training very hard and is very deserving of this award," said head coach Gary Wilson.

Duwell is a fifth-year senior from West Bend, Wis. and is double-majoring in marketing and operations management. She and the Gophers will run next on Sept. 26 in the Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minn. At last year's Griak Duwell led the Gopher team to victory with a second-place individual finish.
