The Minnesota men’s and women’s cross country teams were among the top 30 teams in the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason Cross Country Poll, released today. The Golden Gopher women, the two-time defending Big Ten Conference champion, were tabbed No. 8 in the nation, while the Minnesota men are ranked No. 17.

The defending national champions, Oregon for the men and Washington for women, both notched No. 1 national rankings in the preseason poll. Oregon is followed by Oklahoma State, Stanford, Wisconsin and Northern Arizona in the top five. Other Big Ten teams ranked are No. 22 Michigan and No. 28 Penn State.

Washington is followed by Oregon, Florida State, West Virginia and Villanova in the nation’s top five. The Gopher women, as one of only three teams (Illinois and Stanford) to finish in the top 12 in each of the last four NCAA Championships, are the top-ranked Big Ten team. Illinois is ranked No.10, while Wisconsin stands at No. 15, Michigan State at No. 17 and Michigan at No. 19.

Minnesota hosts the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 26, in its next action. The event, in its 24th year, is annually one of the largest cross country meets in the nation.
