Gophers Ready for Lady Northern

Lady Northern Invitational: Minnesota continues the 2009-10 golf season this coming Sunday and Monday at the Lady Northern Invitational in Madison, Wis. The invitational, hosted by the University of Wisconsin women’s golf team, will be played at the 6,246 yard, par 72 University Ridge golf course. 

Last October, University Ridge, a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed course, was rated the top collegiate golf course and #28 in the Reader’s Choice Awards for “Top 50” public category in GolfWorld magazine. University Ridge will also play host to this year’s Big Ten Championships on April 23-25, 2010.
The players will play 36 holes on Sunday, Sept. 27 and finish with 18 holes on Monday, Sept. 28. Live scoring will be available on www.golfstat.com.
The tournament field includes: College of Charleston, Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Southern Methodist, Wisconsin.

2009 Mary Fossum Invite Recap: Minnesota opened the 2009-10 season with a 7th place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State at Forest Akers West golf course. Scoring a weekend-best 303 as a team on the final day, Minnesota jumped up two spots in the team rankings in the final stanza. For the weekend, Minnesota bettered itself each round to put up a +54 effort (310-305-303).
The Gophers finished two shots behind sixth place Michigan, who produced a 297 on the third day to inch past Minnesota. Michigan State won the Mary Fossum with a score of +11, followed by Purdue, Indiana and Northwestern respectively.
Individually, Junior Teresa Puga held the top spot for Minnesota with a +9 (225) for the tournament, finishing tied for 16th overall. Puga paced the Gopher effort Sunday by shooting 73 in the tournament’s final round.
Freshman Jackie Shepherd made an impressive collegiate debut by tying for second among Gophers with a +14 effort (78-76-76). Tying Shepherd was junior Michele Edlin (79-75-76). Fellow junior Mary Narzisi and senior Christine Herzog each finished in a tie for 50th place.
The Gophers: Minnesota will be traveling this week with senior Christine Herzog, juniors Michele Edlin, Mary Narzisi, Teresa Puga and Sam Sommers and freshmen Jackie Shepherd. Shepherd, a true freshman from Delafield Wis., made her collegiate debut on Sept.12 at the Mary Fossum Invitational. 
The junior trio of Narzisi, Puga and Edlin have played in a combined 56 tournaments since arriving on campus, including a team-leading 21 by Narzisi. All three were in the lineup for all 11 tournaments the Gophers competed in last season. 
Up Next: The Golden Gophers will travel to Erie, Colo. for the Colorado Invitational on October 4-5, 2009. The Colorado Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado-Boulder, will be played at the Omni Interlocken Resort, a 27-hole championship golf resort located in the Denver-Boulder area.
