Gophers Set for Wolverine Invite

2009 WOLVERINE AT RADRICK FARMS: The Gophers travel this week to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the 2009 Wolverine at Radrick Farms Golf Course, hosted by the University of Michigan. The course is a Pete Dye championship layout, par 72 playing at 6,979 yards. The players will play 36 holes on Saturday, Sept. 26 and finish with 18 holes on Sunday, Sept. 27. There will be no “true” live scoring for the tournament, but results can be found at www.golfstat.com.
There are 14 teams participating in the Wolverine at Radrick Farms, including: Arkansas, Baylor, Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Louisville, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Minnesota, Purdue, St. John's, Toledo, Wisconsin and Xavier.
GOPHER INVITATIONAL RECAP: The Gophers finished third, three shots ahead of fourth place North Carolina-Charlotte. Kelly Kraft of Southern Methodist finished with a tournament record score of 15-under par 201 to take home medalist honors.
Senior Ben Pisani, playing in his fourth Gopher Invitational, paced the Gophers all weekend including a then course record 65 in the opening round. He carded a second round 71 and a third round total of 73 for a 54-hole score of 7-under 209 to finish runner-up, eight shots behind the medalist Kraft. The 7-under total of 209 is a career-low as is the first round tally of 65. His runner-up finish can also be added to the Pisani record book. His previous best was a third place finish at last spring's Big Ten Championships.
Freshman Frederick Van Rooyen played the invite as an individual but posted the best score of the day for any Gopher with a 4-under par 68. The native South African finished in a tie for 14th place. Redshirt freshman Robert Bell made his collegiate debut this weekend and finished alone in 20th place with a score of 221. Cameron White started the day on fire with a pair of birdies and an eagle in his first four holes but cooled and finished with a 74. His tournament tally of 6-over 222 was good for a six-way tie for 21st.
The Gophers also counted scores from senior Thomas Campbell and sophomore Derek Chang over the weekend. Chang fought his way through an opening round 88 to play the final 36 holes at even par. He finished 58th. Other individuals playing the invite for Minnesota were David Haley Jr., Tim Peterzen, Christopher Meyer, Justin Kaplan and Shang Zhi.
THE GOPHERS: Minnesota will be traveling this week with seniors Ben Pisani and Thomas Campbell, sophomore Derek Chang, and freshmen Fredrick Van Rooyen and David Haley, Jr. Van Rooyen, a true freshman, and Haley Jr., a redshirt freshman, both played as individuals at the 2009 Gopher Invitational and will be making their first career starts for the Golden Gophers.
UP NEXT: The Golden Gophers will travel to Chicago, Ill. for the Windon Invitational on Oct. 4-5, 2009. The Windon Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University, will be played at Skokie Country Club. The players will play 36 holes on Sunday, Oct. 4 and the final 18 holes on Monday, Oct. 5. The Gophers have come away with the Windon Invite championship on three occasions (Co-champs in 1994, 1998 & 2003). The best individual finishes in the event for the Gophers were a couple of runner-ups from James McClean (1999) and Justin Smith (2003).
Past individual participants of this event include Luke Donald while at Northwestern, Tiger Woods (Stanford), Ben Curtis (Kent State), Hunter Mahan (Oklahoma State) and Colt Knost (SMU).
