Gophers Score 193.375 in Season Opener

Minnesota started the meet on vault, where it earned a team score of 48.40. Lucy Ennis, a sophomore, was the top scorer for the Gophers, placing third overall with a 9.775 to tie her personal best score. Kylie Smith was the second-highest Minnesota scorer, coming in sixth overall with a personal best 9.675. Minnesota had two freshmen in the vault line up, and Jasmine Brown and Janell Campbell tied for seventh place with scores of 9.650.
The Gophers struggled on bars, counting two falls in the team score of 48.025. Alexis Russell and Kendra Elm were bright spots for Minnesota on the unevens, as Russell took first place with a 9.875 and Elm tied for third place with a 9.825.
Minnesota had its highest team score of the night on balance beam with a tally of 48.550. Juniors Kristin Furukawa and Ana Balboa were the top scorers for the Gophers, tying for third place overall with scores of 9.825. Balboa’s score tied her personal best. Sophomore Briana Jones scored 9.675 in the first beam performance of her Gopher career, placing eighth overall.
On floor, Minnesota earned a 48.40 and was led by freshman Janell Campbell who earned a 9.90 in the first floor performance of her Gopher career. Senior Alexis Russell was the runner up, earning a 9.875. Amber Hammerschmidt, a sophomore, scored 9.725 in the first competition of her Minnesota career after transferring from Arizona State.
Minnesota’s lone all around competitor was senior Alexis Russell, who took first place with a 39.075.
Next up for the Gophers is a tri-meet with Nebraska and Illinois in Lincoln, Neb. Next Saturday. Minnesota returns to the Sports Pavilion to host Big Ten rival Michigan State on Saturday, Jan. 23.
