Gophers and Beavers Tie Francis Wins Shootout

1/17/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

For the second-straight day, the No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team and the Bemidji State Beavers tied, 1-1, today at the John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. Megan Bozek scored the Golden Gophers' lone goal, while Brittany Francis earned an extra point in Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings as she scored in the sixth round of the shootout. Minnesota is now 17-3-4 overall and 13-2-3 in the WCHA.

It goes in the books as a tie, but with the tie and the two shootout wins, Minnesota still gained four points in the WCHA standings and now have 32 points in the league standings. With the two points, Bemidji State is tied with Minnesota Duluth and Wisconsin for second place until the Badgers and Bulldogs play for second tonight. All three teams have 21 points in the league standings.

Bemidji State took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity early when Erin Cody scored at 3:30 in the first period. As the Gophers were changing lines, Cody and Annie Bauerfeld created the two-on-one attempt. Gopher goalie Noora Räty came out of the net to play the puck and Cody used her backhand to score the goal.

Bozek tied the game at 13:09 in the third when she scored on a power-play rebound attempt. Emily West took the initial shot, while Sarah Erickson set up the play to score the game-tying goal. The Gophers poured on the pressure, outshooting the Beavers 19-6 in the second period.

The two teams went scoreless in the third with Minnesota continuing the added pressure with a 16-8 shot advantage. However, the Gophers couldn't get the puck past BSU goalie Zuzana Tomcikova.

After the two teams went scoreless in the overtime and sent it to the shootout for the second-straight day. After five scoreless rounds, Francis placed the puck over Tomcikova's left shoulder for the shootout-winning goal. BSU had one last chance to tie the shootout when Marlee Wheelhouse attempted a shot in the sixth shootout attempt.

In all, Minnesota attempted 102 shots, including the 45 on goal, 30 shots blocked and 27 went wide.

Tomcikova had 44 saves in the game, while Räty had 24 saves.

Minnesota hosts North Dakota next weekend. Friday's game is at 7:07 p.m., while Friday's is at 4:07 p.m.
