Northwestern scored four three throws in the final two minutes to erase a three-point Minnesota lead and send the Golden Gophers home with a 61-60 loss. Minnesota fell to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in Big Ten play.
Kiara Buford led the Gophers with 13 points, while Zoe Harper came off the bench to contribute 10 points.
Jackie Voigt put the Gophers up 60-57 by nailing a jumper from the left baseline with 1:56 left to play. Northwestern (12-6, 3-4) faced the Gopher defense and seemed to be in trouble in a trap at halfcourt but Brittany McCoy was whistled for a reaching foul sending Wildcat guard Brittany Orban to the free throw line in a bonus situation.
Orban hit both with 1:47 to play to bring Northwestern back to within a point at 60-59.
The Gophers worked the ball around the perimeter with Voigt taking a jumper that bounced long off the rim. Harper was called for an over-the-back foul on the rebound as the Wildcats’ Orban returned to the free throw line. She made the first and missed the second tying the score at 60-60 with 1:23 remaining.
Minnesota looked to leading scorer Buford for the big play but it was Wildcat All-Big Ten center Amy Jaeschke that stepped up. Buford drove into the lane and rose for a jumper. Jaeschke blocked the shot and grabbed the rebound.
The Wildcats’ final possession was a long one. Jaeschke was forced into a tough jumper by great Harper defense but Kristin Cartwright grabbed the offensive rebound. Jaeschke tried again shooting with nine seconds left but Cartwright collected another rebound. Cartwright went up for the shot that was blocked by Harper with 4.9 seconds left. Northwestern retained possession.
Northwestern set up a play. Orban cut around the lane and caught the inbounds pass. Ohm was called for a foul sending Orban to the line one more time.
Orban missed the first free throw but made the winning free throw with 4.1 on the clock.
The Gophers sprinted up the court. Harper set a bruising screen to free up McCoy for a last-second shot just inside the three-point line. The shot bounced hard off the rim.
“We have to learn to finish a game,” said Golden Gopher head coach. “We had a lot of people off the bench make contributions but it was for 38 minutes. We need 40.”
The Gophers played without starting guard China Antoine, who suffered a left knee injury in practice on Saturday morning. Antoine will be further evaluated on Monday.
Minnesota’s next game is Sunday, Jan. 24, when the Gophers play host to Michigan State.
