Gophers in the Lead After Day One of SWCCC

The No. 10 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team is in the lead with 160 points after day one of the two-day Swimming World College Conference Carnival in East Brunswick, N.J. Minnesota won five events tonight.
Minnesota opened the day with the 400 medley relay and took the top two spots. Minnesota’s relay of Hannah Whitehead, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Alison Eggers earned the win in a time of 3:44.86, while Minnesota’s B relay of Castina Wabeke, Haley Spencer, Molly Belk and Marissa Davies finished second in 3:50.83.
Ashley and Kristen Steenvoorden did well in their hometown, adding a one-two punch in the 500 free event. Ashley won it in a time of 4:49.41, while Kristen finished second in 4:52.52. Tyler continued the Gophers’ winning ways when she won the 100 breast in a time of 2:14.99. Haley Spencer also competed in the event, finishing right behind her teammate with a second-place time of 2:17:02.
Whitehead led the Gophers in the 200 back when she placed second in 2:01.95. Eggers and Davies finished in the top two in the 100 free. Eggers won the event in 52.22, while Davies followed closely behind in 52.36. Jamison added a career-best time of 2:00.26 to win the 200 fly, while Belk placed second in 2:00.94. Kristen Steenvoorden led the Gopher contingent in the 200 IM with a second-place finish (2:05.67), while Tyler was third in 2:06.59.
Jamison, Eggers, Meagan Radecke and Davies combined for a win in the 200 free relay. The foursome clocked a time of 1:35.62 for the win as they closed out the first day. Minnesota’s B relay of Wabeke, Belk, Whitehead and Ashley Steenvoorden was fifth (1:38.38) in the same event.
Action at the SWCCC is set to continue tomorrow.
