McGinnis, Schwecke One-Two After Day One of Heptathlon

Minnesota heptathletes R.J. McGinnis and Joey Schwecke are in first and second place, respectively, after the first day of the heptathlon at the Bill Bergan Open hosted by Iowa State. McGinnis, the defending Big Ten champion, scored 3,244 in the first four events and owns a 101-point lead over his Gopher counterpart Schwecke with 3,143. The heptathlon concludes on Friday.
Schwecke sprinted to an early lead, scoring 854 points after running a time of 7.08 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 828 points with an effort of 23 feet, 1 1/2 inches. McGinnis took the lead in the third event, the shot put, landing a throw of 49-9 1/2. He then extended his lead by clearing 6-8 3/4 in the high jump.
Brock Spandl is in fifth place after day one in the heptathlon with 2,653 points.
The event continues on Friday with the 60-meter high hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000-meter run.
