Kiara Buford led the Golden Gophers with 21 points, but Minnesota can look to a stifling defensive performance as the key to a 72-69 overtime victory over Iowa in Williams Arena on Sunday. The Gophers improved to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play.

The Gopher defense held the Hawkeyes scoreless in the last 5:15 of regulation, and without a field goal in the last 8:28, to force the overtime period. Iowa owned a 62-57 lead when Kachine Alexander hit two free throws with 5:15 left to give the Hawkeyes a five-point lead.
Katie Ohm started the Gopher comeback with a three-pointer from the right wing on the next possession, but Minnesota didn’t tie the game at 62-62 until Brittany McCoy scored on lay-in with 2:41 remaining.
The score would hold. Ashley Ellis-Milan had two open shots in separate possessions but neither fell. She made up for it on the defense end drawing a big offensive foul on Alexander with 1:23 left. Buford missed a mid-range jumper with 13 seconds remaining and with 11.1 seconds, Iowa (8-7, 1-3) set up their attempt at a game winner.
Hawkeye guard Kamile Wahlin, who came in scoring a team-high 16.4 points per game but only had four today, took an 18-footer with two seconds left. The clock ran out on the scramble for the rebound.
McCoy, who finished with 14 points and seven assists, scored on a pull-up jumper in the Gophers’ first possession of the extra period. Alexander answered for the Hawkeyes with a three-point play, giving Iowa its final lead at 65-64 with 4:08 left.
Buford scored her only basket of the overtime to put the Gophers back into the lead at 66-65 with 3:37 on the clock. The Gopher defense forced the Hawkeyes into team turnovers via 30-second shot clock violations in their next two possessions. China Antoine hit a baseline jumper with 1:48 to extend the Gopher lead to 68-65.
The game still hung in the balance after the Gophers missed some free throws that would have iced away the victory. Buford went 3-for-6 in the last 19 seconds, but her free throw with two seconds left made it a three-point game. Iowa’s long inbounds pass was intercepted by McCoy and the Gophers celebrated the victory.
Iowa’s Jamie Printy scored a career-high 26 points, 19 coming in the first half. The Hawkeyes owned a 42-36 halftime lead thanks to a 15-of-16 performance at the free throw line. Iowa went to the line only five times in the second half and overtime combined. Alexander posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Buford finished with a double-double of her own with 10 rebounds in addition to her 21 points. She also chipped in three assists, two blocked shots and four steals.
Antoine was the third Gopher in double figures with 15 points, including a career-best four three-point field goals.
Minnesota hosts Northwestern on Thursday, Jan. 7, in the Gophers’ next game.
