Gophers Complete First Day of Quad Duals

The No. 10 University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team hold a lead over Purdue and Illinois and trail Wisconsin by 14 points after the first day of the two-day Quad Duals in Madison, Wis. Action continues tomorrow at noon.
Minnesota started the meet with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay. Alison Eggers, Meagan Radecke, Abigail Staats and Marissa Davies combined for a time of 1:35.42. Kaylee Jamison led the Gophers in the 200 individual medley when she clocked a time of 2:05.29 for third place. Paige Bradley followed in sixth with a time of 2:06.24.
Ashley Steenvoorden earned the Gophers' first event win when she won the 500 free. Steenvoorden touched the wall in 4:49.19, a provisional qualifying time. Her sister Kristen Steenvoorden finished fourth overall in the same event in 4:52.25.
Jillian Tyler earned a win in the 100 breast when she clocked a time of 1:00.85, which broke her previous pool record of 1:01.68 in 2009 as well as a provisional mark. Haley Spencer followed closely and finished third in 1:03.37.
Hannah Whitehead and Andrea Hanson led the Gophers in the 200 back. Whitehead placed fifth overall in 2:02.63, while Hanson was sixth in 2:03.92. Wisconsin's Maggie Meyer won the event in 1:56.99. Radecke led the Gophers in the 100 free event with a sixth-place time of 51.60, while Davies was ninth in 52.05.
Molly Belk led the Gopher contingent in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.47 for the third-best time. Megan Braun followed in sixth in 2:04.96. Minnesota then finished the night with a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The relay of Whitehead, Tyler, Jamison and Radecke held a time of 3:43.90 for a pool record. However, the Badgers finished ahead of Minnesota in 3:40.95 for a provisional NCAA time and the new pool record.
In the diving well, Katie Grunawalt won her first event as a Golden Gopher when she won the 3-meter event. Grunawalt scored a 237.45 for the win, while second-place finisher Ciara Rinaudo (Wisconsin) was second with a score of 262.25. Grunawalt also accomplished a second-place finish in the 1-meter with a score of 259.75.
