Gophers Earn Two Wins at Quad Duals

The No. 10 University of Minnesota earned a win over Purdue and Illinois, but fell to Wisconsin as the Quad Duals, which concluded today in Madison, Wis. The Golden Gophers earned a score of 235-95 over Illinois and a 173-147 win over Purdue, but fell, 179-151 to the Badgers.
The Gophers started the day with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Hannah Whitehead, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Meagan Radecke combined for a time of 1:43.43. Minnesota’s B relay of Castina Wabeke, Haley Spencer, Megan Braun and Alison Eggers clocked a time of 1:46.54 for fifth overall.
Twins Ashley and Kristen Steenvoorden provided a one-two punch in the 1,000 freestyle event. Ashley won the event in a time of 9:57.21, while Kristen placed second in 9:58.15. Meagan Radecke led the Gophers in the 50 free with a fourth-place finish of 23.81, while Alison Eggers was sixth in 23.88. Whitehead placed fourth in the 100 back (56.99), while Andrea Hanson was eighth in 58.59.
Jillian Tyler placed second in the 200 breaststroke. Tyler clocked a provisional and pool record time of 2:12.24, but Wisconsin’s Ashley Wanland touched the wall just ahead of Tyler in 2:12.15 to win the event. Spencer rounded out the top three with a time of 2:16.96.
Minnesota took the next two spots in the 100 fly. Jamison won it in 54.96, just ahead of teammate Braun, who clocked a time of 57.19. Whitehead and Lauren Weis led the Gopher contingent with a fourth and fifth-place finish in the 200 free. Whitehead held a time of 1:51.52, while Weis placed sixth in 1:51.77.
The next event up today was the 400 IM in which Kristen Steenvoorden placed second in 4:26.29. Molly Belk added a third-place time of 4:27.18, while Elizabeth Weitz was fifth in 4:29.14.
The Gophers closed out the event with a third-place finish in the 400 free relay. Radecke, Davies, Jamison and Eggers combined for a time of 3:26.64.
Minnesota hosts its only home event of the second semester next weekend at the University Aquatic Center in the Minnesota Challenge. Friday’s action starts at 6 p.m. and continues at noon on Feb. 6 and again at 6 p.m. The Gophers then take time off to prepare for the Big Ten Championships, held in West Lafayette, Ind., Feb. 17-20.
