Gophers Open Second Half with 5-2 Win

1/9/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

The No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team had five different goal scorers in a 5-2 win over No. 10 Ohio State, tonight, at Ridder Arena. With the win the Golden Gophers improve to 16-3-2 overall and 12-2-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Ohio State got on the board early when Rachel Davis dumped a shot on goal along the boards near center ice. The puck bounced and Gopher goalie Alyssa Grogan couldn't stop the puck as it bounced past her and through to the net. Jaimie Horton, however, tied the game when she scored her first goal of the season at 7:22 in the first. Kelli Blankenship provided a great feed in front of the net as she passed it from the bottom of the right circle to Horton, who was streaking in through the slot.

The Buckeyes responded and took their second lead of the game when Kim Theut scored on a wrap around at 9:22 to take a 2-1 lead after one. Minnesota and OSU each had 11 shots in the period.

However, the Gophers retaliated when Megan Bozek scored a power-play goal at 4:01 in the second period. Sarah Erickson found Megan Bozek at the point and she scored her fourth goal of the season. Brittany Francis tallied the second assist. Emily West scored at 8:15 after Erickson fed her the puck for her 14th goal of the season. Alexandra Zebro started the play, passing the puck to Erickson behind the goal line and tallied her third assist.

Terra Rasmussen scored her seventh goal of the season when Horton found her at the back door at 8:08 in the third. Kelli Blankenship added the second assist. Minnesota lit the lamp one last time when Brittany Francis scored at 9:17. Linemates West and Erickson tallied the assists.

Alyssa Grogan earned her fourth win of the season when she had nine saves in the first, four in the second and five in the third for a three-period total of 18. OSU's Chelsea Knapp had 32 saves, including 12 in the second.

Minnesota and OSU will conclude the series tomorrow at 4 p.m.
