Gopher Women Win Blugold Open

Minnesota landed seven finishers in the top 15 to cruise to the team title at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Open on Saturday in Colfax, Wis. The Golden Gophers scored 30 points with its five scorers all pulling single-digit scores. Defending NCAA Division III champion UW-Eau Claire was second with 49 points.

Senior Kelly Wilson topped the Gophers with a fourth-place finish, covering the 6-kilometer course at the Whitetail Golf Course in a time of 22 minutes, 15.4 seconds. Cassy Opitz was sixth in a time of 22:30.4, followed by Kathryn Ritter in seven (22:36.5), Katie Salvatore in eighth (22:39.7) and Kait Mincke in 11th (22:49.7).

Closing out the top seven for the Gophers were Laura Koch in 12th (22:53.8) and Maggie Bollig in 15th (23:01.6).

Two individuals who battled for the Griak Women’s Maroon III crown a week ago faced off again at the Blugold Open but with different results. This week, it was Carleton’s Simone Childs-Walker who captured medalist honors with a time of 21:46.7. Griak champ Alyssa Sybilrud of UW-Eau Claire was second.

Minnesota’s top runners will compete on Saturday in the South Dakota State Invitational in Brookings, S.D.
