Minnesota Defeats Purdue in Four Sets

The Minnesota volleyball team (12-3, 2-1) defeated Purdue (10-4, 1-2) in four sets by scores of 25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 25-21 at the Sports Pavilion on Friday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m.
Minnesota was led by Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) who had 16 kills, 15 digs and a career-high seven blocks. Wittman has six block solos which was one of the school-record set by Erin Martin on Dec. 10, 2004 against Georgia Tech. Junior libero
Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) finished with a career-best 38 digs. It was the highest number of digs by a Gopher since Christine Tan had 39 digs on Sept. 20, 2008 in a loss against North Carolina. It also tied for the sixth-highest dig total in school history.
Sophomore setter Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) finished with a career-high 52 assists, six digs, two kills and a service ace. Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.) also had a career-high 14 kills, hit .414 (14-2-29), had seven digs and two blocks. Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.) had 10 kills and three solo blocks, while Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) finished with nine kills and 11 digs. Steffi Sooter (Santa Cruz, Calif.) also finished with 10 digs, while Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) finished with nine kills and hit .316.
Minnesota limited Purdue to a -.103 hitting percentage in the first set, and collected four blocks. In the second set, the Gophers trailed 23-22, but Wittman delivered a kill to tie it and Purdue followed with an attack error to make it set point. After Purdue tied it at 24, Filho delivered a kill and the Boilermakers had an attack error. The Gophers hit .395 (16-1-38) in the set, while Purdue hit .386 (22-5-44).
The Gophers appeared as if they would win in three when they moved ahead 23-19 in the third set after a kill by Tabberson. However, Purdue rattled off the final six points to claim the set 25-23.
Minnesota trailed 20-19 in the third set, before rattling off six of the final eight points to close it out 25-21. Dixon and Harms tied it at 20 when they combined on a block. Dixon and Love followed with consecutive kills to make it 22-20, but Purdue closed it to 22-21. Dixon followed with a kill and a solo block to make it match point. Love closed it out on a long point to give Minnesota the four-set victory.
The Gophers outhits Purdue .220 (60-20-182) to .168 (60-28-190) on the night, and had 13 blocks to 11. Minnesota finished with the seventh-highest block solo total in school history with 10 in the match. Both teams finished with 90 digs on the night. Purdue had three service aces to two for the Gophers, but Minnesota only committed one service error to seven for the Boilermakers.
Purdue was led by Ariel Turner who had 19 kills, 12 digs and four blocks, while Tiffany Fisher finished with 16 kills and eight blocks. Setter Jaclyn Hart had 49 assists, 13 digs, four blocks and four kills, while Carly Cramer had a team-high 30 digs.
Minnesota will be back in action when it hosts Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. That match can be seen live in the Gold Zone.
