10/21/2010 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
The Big East and Big Ten conferences, in conjunction with the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission released the schedule for the third Big East/Big Ten Baseball Challenge. The 2011 Challenge will feature eight teams from each conference playing in 24 games over three days to open the college baseball season from Feb. 18-20.
Minnesota will face Connecticut, Louisville and St. John's in this year's Big East/Big Ten Challenge. The three Gopher opponents are the same ones they faced in the 2010 Big East/Big Ten Challenge. All three opponents advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 2010, and both Louisville and Connecticut were hosts last season.
The Gophers will face St. John's at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium in Clearwater Fla. on Friday, Feb. 18 at 12 p.m. (CT) to open up the 2011 campaign. Minnesota will then face Connecticut at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. (CT). The Gophers' final opponent will be Louisville on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. (CT).
Last year, Minnesota went 0-3 in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge, but played in a pair of tight one-run games with St. John's and Louisville that were decided in the ninth inning. In 2009, the Gophers went 2-1 in the inaugural Big East/Big Ten Challenge with wins over West Virginia and Michigan State.
The 2011 Challenge will feature Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Seton Hall, St. John’s and West Virginia from the Big East, as well as Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue from the Big Ten. The event will be played at current and former Major League facilities in the St. Pete/Clearwater area, including Bright House Field and Dunedin Stadium, the spring homes of the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays, respectively. Games will also be played at Clearwater’s Jack Russell Memorial Stadium, and St. Petersburg’s Al Lang Field and the Walter Fuller Baseball (Naimoli) Complex.
In 2009, the Big Ten won the inaugural Challenge in 2009, 15-9, while the Big East was victorious in the 2010 event, 17-13.
Ticket information for the 2011 Challenge will be released at a later date.
