The No. 19 Minnesota women’s cross country team is set to compete in the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Sunday at the Zimmer Championships Course in Verona, Wis. Wisconsin plays host to the Big Ten meet for the first time since 2000. The women’s 6-kilometer race begins at 10:45 a.m.
The Golden Gophers will line up a talented, yet relatively inexperienced, team at the Big Tens this season. Only Nikki Swenson, Stephanie Price and Kayla Wagner have run at the Conference meet, combining for five races of experience. Compare that to last year’s group that ran 23 Big Ten cross country races among them.
Despite the new faces, the expectations of contending for a Big Ten title are still as high as ever. At No. 19, the Gophers are one of five nationally ranked teams in the Big Ten.
Gophersports.com caught up with veteran coach Gary Wilson and chatted about the Big Ten Championships. Wilson is in his 26th season at Minnesota. The Big Ten Championships have been around only slightly longer, celebrating its 30th year.
