The No. 3 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs rallied for a 3-2 win over the No. 6 University of Minnesota women's hockey team, tonight in Duluth, Minn. After holding a 2-1 leading heading into the third period, the Bulldogs came back to score two goals in the third in the come-from-behind win. With the loss, the Gophers are now 5-3-0 overall and 2-3-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Gophers opened up the first period with two quick penalties, one resulting in a UMD power-play goal. Jessica Wong scored at 5:11 in the first period. With the goal, it broke Noora Raty's scoreless streak against her opponents. She play 245 minutes and 11 seconds without allowing a goal this season. However, the Gophers responded 2:23 with a power-play goal of their own when Kelly Seeler scored at 7:34 in the first. Seeler received a perfect back door pass with the assists being credited to Megan Bozek and Sarah Erickson. It was UMD's first allowed goal in three-straight games.
Sarah Davis gave the Gophers a 2-1 lead heading into the third period at 19:34 in the second. Davis tipped a Anne Schleper shot from the point in front of the net to give Minnesota a one-goal lead. Kelly Terry held the second assist. After only firing off five shots in the first, Minnesota rattled off 11 shots on goal in the second period and hit its sixth pipe shot in two games and second of the evening. UMD wasn't without its chances as well. The Bulldogs had nine shots on goal and rang one off the right post as well.
However, the Bulldogs rallied back scoring two goals in the third period to take a 3-2 win away from the Gophers. Elin Holmlov scored just 52 seconds into the third period on an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2. Pernilla Winberg then scored at 13:55 on a Gopher breakdown in their zone with the assists from Holmlov and goalie Jennifer Harss to win the game.
Minnesota attempted a comeback when it pulled Raty with a minute remaining. The Gophers then took a timeout, followed by a UMD timeout. The Gophers were unable to muster anything together in the final moments to put it at a 3-2 contest. Raty finished the game with 31 saves, while Harss had 20 in her third win of the season. It was Raty's first loss of the year.
Minnesota will look to rebound tomorrow at 7:07 p.m.
