Gophers Edge Wisconsin, Improves to 4-0

The Minnesota women’s swimming & diving team notched an exciting comeback victory over border-rival Wisconsin by a score of 152.5-146.5. The Golden Gophers improve to 4-0 in dual meet this season, 3-0 against Big Ten opponents.
The 500-yard freestyle race turned the tide in the Gophers’ favor. Junior Ashley Steenvoorden and twin sister Kristen finished first-second in the event to kick-start Minnesota’s comeback effort. Ashley clocked a time of 4:49.39 to win the event, collecting her second title in the meet. She also won the 1,000 free in a time of 9:45.28. Kristen was second in the 500 in a time of 4:50.76, then later added her winning mark in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:04.36.

Jillian Tyler also grabbed two individual titles placing first in the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:00.22 and 2:11.95 respectively. Tyler’s 200 time set a new Minnesota-Wisconsin dual meet record.
Other Gophers winning events were Molly Belk in the 200 fly (2:01.57) and Katie Grunawalt in the 1-meter diving (271.05).
The Gophers host a pair of dual meets next weekend, Friday, Nov. 5 versus Iowa and Saturday, Nov. 6 against North Carolina.
