GSS Highlights Libero Jessica Granquist

10/6/2010 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

Gopher Sports Spotlight highlights one of the most unique athletes to play any sport for Minnesota. We caught up with Gopher volleyball libero Jessica Granquist. Coach Mike Hebert will tell you that the libero is one of the most important positions on the court since the ball is so often in that player’s hands. This defensive specialist extraordinaire is not allowed to attack the ball but freely subs for any backrow player, making them invaluable to a team’s passing game. For those unfamiliar with volleyball, the libero is easily identified by wearing a different color jersey than their teammates.

Since the sport established the new position in 2002, Minnesota has enjoyed having several of the best liberos in the nation wear the Maroon and Gold. Granquist is up for the challenge of being the next great libero in Minnesota history.

Granquist has already been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week twice in the 2010 season.
