Gophers Earn 1-0 Shutout Win Over MSU
11/20/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey
Sarah Erickson scored the lone goal and Noora Raty recorded a shutout to lead the No. 6/7 University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over Minnesota State, tonight, at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. With the win, the Golden Gophers snapped a four-game win streak for MSU and improve their record to 7-5-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
After a scoreless first period, Minnesota broke the tie with a goal at 8:22 in the second period. Erickson picked up the puck along the back boards and wrapped the puck around the goal and jammed it passed MSU goalie Alli Altmann for the lone goal. It was Erickson's fourth goal of the season and third in two games. Erickson, who played at the Four Nations Cup last weekend, was assisted by Kelly Seeler and Bethany Brausen.
The Erickson goal would be all that sophomore goalie Noora Raty needed to record the win. Raty had a great performance, stopping all 27 MSU shots on goal. She had nine saves in the first, 12 in the second and six in the third for a three-period total of 27. Tonight's game marked her fifth shutout of the season, and 12th of her career. MSU's Altmann had 23 saves, giving up just one goal.
Minnesota and Minnesota State will battle again tomorrow at 3:07 p.m., again at All Seasons Arena.
