Minnesota junior Stephanie Price captured her first career All-America honor with a 31st-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Monday. The Golden Gophers finished 27th as a team on a warm and very windy Indiana afternoon

Price covered the 6-kilometer LaVern Gibson Championships course in a time of 20 minutes, 46.7 seconds. Price stayed with the lead pack until the 4-kilometer mark in the race where the eventual champion Sheila Reid of Villanova and runner-up Emily Infeld of Georgetown began to pull away. Reid won the crown in 20:06.9.

The Gophers slid in the team standings after their number-two runner Missa Varpness fell with about only 200 meters left in the race and did not finish.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said Gopher head coach Gary Wilson, in his 26th second at Minnesota. “That was one of the ugliest national races I’ve ever seen. No team was ever really able to find a rhythm. Maybe it was the wind or maybe that it was warmer than normal. Obviously it unfortunate that we lost Missa and that probably cost us five or six spots in the team standings. Still, these young women accomplished so much this season. It was a great year.”

Freshman Ashlie Decker was the Gophers’ second finisher, crossing the finish line in a time of 21:31.9 in 124th place. It was her highest finish on the team this season.

Senior Nikki Swenson was 150th in a time of 21:44.0. Completing the scoring for the Gophers was Claire Rindo in 190th in 22:11.2 and Katie Moraczewski in 208th in 22:21.1. Kelly Wilson was 222nd in a time of 22:39.0.

Villanova defended its team title scoring 120 points. The Wildcats were followed by Florida State in second (154), Texas Tech in third (165) and Georgetown in fourth (167).
