First Round Quotes

Creighton 3, Iowa State 2
27-25, 16-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11

Creighton Head Coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth

Opening statement:
“I’ve probably never been as proud of a team, and I’ve been here eight years, and I’ve had a great eight years. The way this team battled against an awesome Iowa State team . . . Sometimes our team follows the game plan, and sometimes our team doesn’t listen to the game plan. This is a year that we [have] listened to [the] game plan.”

“I think the world of the Iowa State program. I think we’re both blue-collar teams, and I challenged our team to outwork Iowa State tonight, and I thought [we] did a great job.

On the possibility of complacency heading into the game:
“Iowa State had the pressure [as] the 16th-ranked team in the country. We tried to tell the team to play loose and enjoy the experience, but we also believed we could be competitive and pull off the upset.”

“We’ve played well the past three weeks. We struggled about four to five weeks ago, and ever since Drake, we’ve been playing well.”

Creighton Player Quotes

Freshman Setter Megan Bober

On her first experience in the NCAA Tournament:
“We came in and we didn’t . . . just want to be here. We started in practice this week knowing that we had a goal to come out Friday night and win this match. It was a great experience to come here, but we knew that it was more than just about that.”

Junior Outside Hitter Karisa Almgren

On realizing the team could win the match:

“I felt it on Sunday when they announced that we were going to be playing Iowa State. We won that first game really close, and then we felt pretty confident. It was frustrating in the games we lost, especially in game four. We really wanted to cinch that one. But throughout the entire time, and as we went into the fifth game, I knew we weren’t going to lose this game. They’re a great team, but we weren’t going to lose tonight.”

Iowa State Head Coach Christy Johnson-Lynch

Opening statement:

“I would first like to congratulate Creighton on a great match. I thought they played really well and served really tough. They knew where to go to attack our weaknesses and I thought they played really aggressive. They didn’t act like a team that was here for the first time. I would like to say a few words about Ashley Mass and Victoria Henson. I think they are two of the best players in the country. I know they’re disappointed with the loss, but one of the reasons we are disappointed is because we have raised the bar so high and these two were part of that. I am still really proud of our team.”

On leading Creighton in several stat categories:
“I think when the scores get lopsided, like 25-16 and 25-19, the stats tend to add up. You could feel that at times Creighton would get on a roll and control the game at key spots, but then we did as well in the games we won.”

On her career at Iowa State:
“I loved it at Iowa State, just being able to learn from all the coaches. I redshirted the first year, so it was kind of like a learning experience the first year and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was great to make it to the tournament with my teammates.”
