Gopher Toy Drive At This Weekend's Events

12/7/2010 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

Golden Gopher student-athletes from across the University of Minnesota will be accepting toy and money donations at men’s and women’s basketball and hockey games to benefit St. Joseph’s Home for Children and to gather contributions for Toys for Tots on December 11 and December 12, 2010.

Fans are encouraged to bring unwrapped toys to any of the four Gopher events over the course of the weekend. On Saturday December 11, toys will be accepted at Williams Arena for the Gopher men’s basketball game against Eastern Kentucky (game begins at 12 p.m.), at Ridder Arena for the Gopher women’s hockey game against the Ohio State Buckeyes (game begins at 2 p.m.), and at Mariucci Arena for the evening Gopher men’s hockey game against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (game begins at 7 p.m.). On Sunday, December 12, toys will be collected at Williams Arena for the Gopher women’s basketball game against the Cal Poly Mustangs at 2 p.m. The toys can be dropped at any of the entrances to the sporting arenas.

The donations that are collected will benefit St. Joseph’s Home for Children and Toys for Tots Twin Cities. Toys for Tots is a program that was started by the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1947 to collect toys during the holiday season to donate to families that cannot afford to buy presents for their children. Last year, Toys for Tots Twin Cities collected and distributed more than 350,000 toys to children in Minneapolis and the surrounding community.
