Minnesota freshman defenseman Nick Leddy has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for his efforts in the Gophers' weekend sweep of seventh-ranked Colorado College.
An Eden Prairie, Minn. native, Leddy had his first career three-point game with the game-winning goal and two assists in the Gophers' 7-4 win over the Tigers on Saturday. On Friday, he led a spirited defensive effort in a 3-0 shutout as the Gophers limited Colorado College to 26 shots and just 13 through the first two periods.
Leddy was also part of a penalty killing unit that held Colorado College to 1-for-11 with just 10 shots on the power play. He had a team-high plus-four rating for the series and leads the team at plus-10 for the season. Leddy has two goals and seven assists for nine points for the season with eight of his points coming in the last 12 games.
It is the first career WCHA weekly award for Leddy and the third time the Gophers have had the league's Rookie of the Week in their last five series. Zach Budish won the award following games against North Dakota on Jan. 15-16 and Alaska Anchorage on Jan. 29-30.
Minnesota is currently 15-15-2 overall and 10-12-2 in the WCHA. The Gophers play at 10th-ranked Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday.
North Dakota took the league's other two weekly awards as Brett Hextall was the league's Offensive Player of the Week and Brad Eidsness was the Defensive Player of the Week.
