Gophers In Third After Big Tens First Night

The Minnesota men's swimming and diving team is in third place following the first evening of competition at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Two events were contested tonight where the Gophers placed third in the 800 freestyle relay and fourth in the 200 medley relay. Michigan leads with 80 points, followed by Ohio State with 68 and the Gophers with 62.
The Gophers set out to repeat as the conference champions in the 200 medley relay to start the night but Michigan cruised to the win in a time of 1:25.72. Minnesota, who broke the conference record in the event a year ago, placed fourth with a time of 1:27.23. The Gophers team consisted of Nadav Kochavi (22.72), Rob Schnitzler (24.50), Kevin Baseheart (21.02) and Michael Richards (18.99). Ohio State placed second in 1:26.38 and Penn State was third in 1:26.65.
The Gophers' team of Alex Wold, Ray Betuzzi, Curt Carlson and Baseheart turned in a time of 6:25.07 to place third in the 800 freestyle relay. Michigan took home first place again in 6:15.80 while Ohio State was second in 6:23.19. Betuzzi turned in a solid split of 1:34.88.
The meet continues tomorrow with the prelims of the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 1-meter diving at 11 a.m. Central. Live results can be found at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
