Minnesota concluded its regular-season schedule with a 70-50 loss at Michigan State on Sunday. The Golden Gophers own a 13-16 overall record; their 6-12 Big Ten mark finishing 11th. Katie Loberg and Kiara Buford each scored 10 points to top the Gophers in scoring.
The Gophers owned one lead in the game, at 4-2, after Ashley Ellis-Milan made back-to-back baskets for Minnesota. The teams exchanged baskets before Loberg’s first field goal with 12:14 left in the first half brought the Gophers to within a point at 11-10.
Michigan State (21-8, 12-6) used a Brittney Thomas three-pointer to ignite a 13-0 run and take control of the game. Over six minutes later, Minnesota managed to break the scoring slump on a pair of free throws by Brittany McCoy, but was never able to cut the deficit down to single digits the remainder of the game. The Spartans led 33-17 at halftime.
Minnesota gained a little confidence on the offensive end of the court with China Antoine hit back-to-back three-point field goals early in the second half. Her second triple fueled a 7-0 Gopher run. Buford capped the run with two free throws, her first points of the game, at the 14:13 mark to close Minnesota to within 11 at 40-29.
The Gophers were unable to get any closer. Michigan State regrouped with a 9-2 run to rebuild a sizable lead. The Spartans’ advantage continued to swell reaching 24 points with 48 seconds remaining.
Loberg added 11 rebounds to her 10 points to tally her first career double-double. Eight of her 11 rebounds came on the offensive end of the court. Buford used a last-second lay-up to work her way into double figures with 10 points.
McCoy tied a Minnesota record for consecutive starts in the game at 126, matching Linda Roberts’ total from 1977-81.
