Golden Gopher guards Brittany McCoy and Kiara Buford were accorded All-Big Ten Honorable Mention acclaim on Monday as the Big Ten Conference announced its women’s basketball honor squads. Both McCoy and Buford had previously been honored on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team as rookies.

McCoy, a senior from Lincolnwood, Ill., was named an honorable mention selection by both the Big Ten’s coaches and media. A 5-10 point guard, McCoy ranked second in the Conference in assists, dishing out 5.0 per game, and third in steals (1.14 spg.) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.86).  In addition, she averaged 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. McCoy has put her mark on Minnesota women’s basketball history starting every one of her 126 career games and compiling over 500 career assists.

Buford, a sophomore from St. Paul, was named to the Big Ten media’s All-Big Ten Honorable Mention team. The 5-11 guard leads the Golden Gophers in scoring averaging 13.3 points per game. A Gopher starter in all 29 games this season, Buford also ranks third on the team in rebounding (4.3 rpg.), assists (1.9 apg.) and steals (1.3 spg.).

Golden Gopher senior Katie Ohm was named as Minnesota’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Award winners are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, they must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Big Ten champion Ohio State’s junior center Jantel Lavender earned her third consecutive Player of the Year award from both the Conference coaches and media. Lavender is the second player to capture three top player awards, joining another Buckeye center Jessica Davenport, who earned the honor from 2005-07).

Lavender was joined on the coaches’ and media’s All-Big Ten First Team squads by teammate Samantha Prahaulis, Illinois’ Jenna Smith and Penn State’s Tyra Grant. The coaches included Iowa’s Kachine Alexander on their first team, while the media instead tabbed Northwestern’s Amy Jaeschke.

Michigan State’s Allyssa DeHaan earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, an award given just by the Big Ten coaches. The coaches selected Michigan State’s Kalisha Keane as their Sixth Player of the Year award recipient. Both the coaches and media named Iowa’s Jaime Printy as the Freshman of the Year. Wisconsin’s Lisa Stone was honored as the Coach of the Year by her peers, while the media named Iowa’s Lisa Bluder as their Coach of the Year recipient.
