Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) struck out a career-high 12 batters, surrendering only four hits and one run in 7.1 innings, as he helped lead the Minnesota baseball team (5-7) to a 7-1 victory over Harvard (2-1) at Mall of America Field at the Metrodome on Friday, Mar. 12.

Rosin's 12 strikeouts were the most by a Golden Gopher pitcher since Glen Perkins struck out 15 batters against Purdue on May 27, 2004. It was also the first double-figure strikeout performance by a Minnesota pitcher since

Kyle Carr had 10 strikeouts against South Dakota State on Mar. 22, 2008. Rosin has collected 24 strikeouts, and has not walked a batter in 21.1 innings this year. Going back to 2009, Rosin has not given up a walk in 23.0 innings. With the win, he moved to 1-1 on the season.

Minnesota was led offensively by redshirt freshman Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) who had a career-high three hits, going 3-for-5 with a run, a triple and two RBI. Sophomore Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) reached base three times, and was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI.

AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) also went 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Redshirt freshman Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Drew Hanish (McKinney, Texas) reached base twice, and was 1-for-1 with two runs.

Sophomore Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) also pitched 1.2 shutout innings, giving up one hit, walking two and striking out two batters. As a pitching staff, Minnesota has struck out 30 batters in the last two games (16 against St. Thomas and 14 against Harvard).

Harvard got on the board with a single run in the top of the second inning. Samuel Franklin started with a one-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Dan Zailskas to make it 1-0.

Minnesota tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Puhl plated O'Shea with an RBI single. The Golden Gophers moved ahead 2-1 when O'Shea brought home Larson with an RBI double.

In the bottom of the fifth, Minnesota scored a single run to move ahead 3-1. Pettersen drew a walk, and moved to third on a wild pitch and throwing error by the catcher. Kvasnicka plated Pettersen with an RBI double to give the Golden Gophers the two-run lead.

Minnesota widened the gap with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 6-1. Geason started the inning by reaching on an error, and moved to second on a ground out by Puhl. Hanish drew a walk, but Geason was wiped out a third base when Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Hanish came home to score when Pettersen reached on an error. Larson plated Schlangen and Pettersen with a two-run triple to move it to a 6-1 advantage for the Golden Gophers.

Pettersen added an RBI single for Minnesota's final run in the bottom of the eighth. Harvard starter Brent Suter took the loss to fall to 0-1, as he gave up six hits, three runs, walked three and struck out five in five innings of work.

Zailiskas led the way for the Crimson going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Franklin went 1-for-4 with a run.

Minnesota will be back in action when it faces Creighton on Saturday, Mar. 13 at 6:35 p.m. and South Dakota State on Sunday, Mar. 14 at 3:05 p.m. Both games will have video and audio in the Gold Zone.
