Minnesota Heads on Spring Trip to Alabama

The Minnesota baseball team (5-9) will head on six-game spring trip to Alabama on Mar. 16-21. The Golden Gophers begin with a two-game series at No. 21 Alabama on Mar. 16-17 and then wrap up with a four-game trip to Samford on Mar. 18-21.

Minnesota's games against the Crimson Tide will be on Tuesday, Mar. 16 at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Mar. 17 at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also face Samford on Thursday, Mar. 18 at 6 p.m., Friday, Mar. 19 at 6 p.m., Saturday, Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Mar. 21 at 12 p.m.

All six games can be heard in the Gold Zone, and final two games will be on KLBB (1220 AM). Minnesota is led by AJ Pettersen who is batting .400 with 14 runs, 22 hits and nine RBI. Pettersen has batted .410 with 11 runs, four doubles and nine RBI since being inserted in the leadoff spot against No. 11 Louisville on Feb. 28. Junior Michael Kvasnicka is also batting .340 with four home runs, 12 RBI, seven doubles and has drawn 13 walks. Kvasnicka is tied for second in the Big Ten in home runs, is third in walks and is first in doubles.

Pitching wise, the Golden Gophers are led by Seth Rosin who is 1-1 with a 2.53 ERA and has struck out 24 batters in 21.1 innings. Rosin has now walked a batter in 21.1 innings of work, and 23.0 innings dating back to last year. In his freshman season, TJ Oakes leads the team in ERA at 2.12 and is 1-0 with 10 strikeouts in 17.0 innings and a .258 opponent's batting average.

Alabama enters the week ranked No. 21 in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 and is 12-1 overall. The Crimson Tide is coming off a four-game home sweep against Stony Brook this past week. Minnesota will face Alabama for the first time since Mar. 2, 2002 when it defeated the Crimson Tide 5-2 in the Dairy Queen Classic. Alabama is led by Clay Jones who is batting .375 with five home runs, 21 RBI and has scored 14 runs. Taylor Douglas is batting .467 with 15 runs and six stolen bases. Josh Rutledge has a team-leading 20 runs, and is batting .370 with three home runs and 16 RBI. Pitching wise, the Crimson Tide are led by Jimmy Nelson who is 3-0 with 0.82 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 22.0 innings. Adam Morgan is also 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 22.0 innings.

Samford enters the week with a 9-6 overall record, and is coming off winning two out of three over College of Charleston in the first weekend of the Southern Conference season. The Bulldogs are led by David Schulze who is batting .333 with a team-leading five home runs and 17 RBI. Stephen Ballard leads the team in runs (18) and RBI (18), and is batting .364 with three homers. Mason Meredith is also batting .339 with three home runs, 17 RBI and 16 runs. Pitching wise, Samford is led by Jonathan Stephens who is 3-0 with a 5.09 ERA in 23.0 innings work. Closer Lex Rutledge is 1-0 with a four saves and a 0.75 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 12.0 innings.
