Golden Gopher sophomore Kelci Bryant placed second in the 1-meter diving event at the 2010 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., on Thursday evening.
Bryant, a Chatham, Ill, native, tallied a score of 352.65 in the six-dive final round. She led after the preliminary round and dove last in the eight-diver final. Houston’s Anastasia Podzniakova, who defeated Bryant in the Zone D Championships last weekend, took control of the competition with a high-scoring dive in the second round and won the national title with an NCAA record score of 356.20. Bryant scored her highest dive in the final on her third attempt, scoring 65.00 on a forward 2 1/2 somersault pike dive but was unable to catch Podzniakova.
The Gophers’ 400-yard medley relay of Hannah Whitehead, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Alison Eggers placed 12th overall, finishing fourth in the “B” Final in a time of 3:35.87. Tyler pushed the Gophers into the lead in her butterfly leg of the race, but Auburn made a late rally for the win. Arizona won the national crown in the event in a time of 3:29.76.
The Gophers finished 7th overall in the 200 freestyle relay. The foursome of Alison Eggers, Megan Braun, Kaylee Jamison and Marissa Davies combined for a time of 1:31.36.
Ashley Steenvoorden finished 18th overall in the 500 free prelims when she clocked a time of 4:42.70. Loren Brandon competed in the same event and finished 49th overall in 4:48.13. Haley Spencer competed in the 200 IM where she finished 54th overall in a time of 2:01.77.
The NCAA Championships, hosted by Purdue, continues through Saturday.
