Junior Stephanie Nucci has transferred from UCLA to the University of Minnesota to play volleyball for the Golden Gophers according to an announcement made by Minnesota Head Volleyball Coach Mike Hebert. Nucci will be eligible to compete for Minnesota in the 2010 season.
Nucci is a 6-2 junior setter from Gilbert, Ariz. She has played for UCLA the past two seasons prior to transferring to Minnesota. For the Golden Gophers it marks the fourth transfer from a Pac-10 institution since 2005. That list includes Taylor Carico (USC), Sarah Florian (USC) and Megan Cumpston (Arizona).
She played three years of varsity volleyball at Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Ariz., and helped the Tigers to a pair of Class 5A State Championships. She was named Fiesta Region Player of the Year and first-team All-State by The Arizona Republic as a junior and senior. Nucci also earned first-team Class 5A All-Southeast Valley honors in 2005 and 2006 and was honored by PrepVolleyball.com as an All-American.
She was one of the Top 50 Recruits in the Class of 2007, was ranked No. 41 on the Senior Aces list and was an Andi Collins Award finalist. Nucci was also named to the Fab 50 in Volleyball Magazine. She played club volleyball with Mizuno Sports Performance, and won AAU National titles in 2004 and 2005 and earned AAU bronze in 2006. She received AAU All-American honors in 2004 and was named an MVP in 2005. Nucci also earned a bronze medal during the 2003, 2005 and 2006 USA Volleyball Junior Olympics, being named to the All-Tournament Team in `04. She was a member of the 2005 USA Youth National Training Team.
Nucci joins Tori Dixon and 2009 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year Ashley Wittman as newcomers who will be eligible to compete for Minnesota in 2010. She joins Ariana Filho (No. 24), Lauren Gibbemeyer (No. 4), Katherine Harms (No. 7), Brianna Haugen (No. 46), Mia Tabberson (No. 33), Dixon (No. 12) and Wittman (No. 6) as Top 50 recruits who will play for the Golden Gophers in 2010. Tabitha Love was also among the top incoming freshman last year, and was the top player to come out of Canada.
“We are excited to add Stephanie (Nucci) to a very talented group of incoming players," said Hebert. "She is an extremely talented athlete who has gained valuable experience at UCLA in her first years. We look forward to having a player of her caliber come in and join an extremely talented group of incoming newcomers."
