Puga Named Big Ten Player of the Week

The Big Ten Conference announced today that Gopher women's golfer Teresa Puga has been named Big Ten Conference Player of the Week. This is the second Big Ten Conference weekly award for this season for Puga. She was awarded her first career weekly award on Feb. 24, becoming the first Minnesota player to be named player of the week since Terra Petsinger received the conference's selection on March 24, 2005.
Puga, a junior from A Coruña, Spain (Blume HS), carded rounds of 77 and 72 on the opening day of the Pinehurst Challenge and paced the Gophers with a score of 78 on the final day to finish in a tie for 23rd place. Puga leads the Gophers with four top-10 finishes this season to go along with a team-best 74.91 stroke average, the lowest season average in the history of the program.
Earlier this season, Puga carded a 54-hole score of 219, tying her for the fifth-lowest individual score in Minnesota history. It was, however, one stroke shy of a career low 218 she carded as a freshman at the Las Vegas Showdown.
Puga's current career average of 76.16 is the best score amongst all players to wear the Maroon & Gold, bettering Kate Hughes' average of 77.57 established from 1985-89.
