Minnesota Defeats Louisiana Tech 3-2

The Minnesota baseball team (8-14) defeated Louisiana Tech (10-11) 3-2 in the series opener at the Metrodome on Friday, Mar. 26.
Junior Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) started and picked up the win to move to 2-2 as he pitched a career-high eight innings, gave up five hits, two runs and struck out eight batters. It marked the third time this year that Rosin struck out eight batters or more in a game. Rosin has walked only two batters in 34.2 innings this year.
Junior Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) pitched a scoreless ninth to collect his second save of the season.Minnesota was led by redshirt freshman Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) who had a career-high three hits, and was 3-for-4 with two runs and a double. Senior Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Junior Brooks Albrecht (Hutchinson, Minn.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) was also 1-for-3 with a run.
Louisiana Tech got on the board first with two runs in the top of the third. Clint Ewing led off by reaching base when he was hit by a pitch, and moved to second on a single by Ashton Hughes. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Roliard that made it second and third. Rosin struck out Mark Threlkeld for the second out, but Alex Williams delivered a two-run single to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Gophers got on the board with a single run in the top of the fifth inning. Puhl led off with a single, and moved to second on a ground out by Geason. Albrecht plated Puhl with an RBI single to cut the Louisiana Tech lead to 2-1.
Minnesota tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Larson led off with an infield single and moved to third after a throwing error that resulted in Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) reaching second after a fielder's choice got him to first. Knudson plated Larson with an RBI infield single tie the game, and moved up to second on a throwing error. Kvasnicka also moved to third on the same play.
After Puhl singled to load the bases with no one out, Louisiana Tech starter Jamey Bradshaw struck out the next three batters top keep the game tied.
Minnesota took its first lead of the game when it scored a single run in the bottom of the eight to make it 3-2. Knudson led off with a single, but was wiped out trying to steal for the first out of the inning. Puhl doubled to right center field with one out. After Bulldog reliever Caleb Dudley retired the next batter, Geason drilled 1-2 pitch to right field for an RBI triple to put the Golden Gophers ahead 3-2.
Bradshaw took a no-decision as he started and gave up eight hits, two runs (one earned), walked two and struck out eight batters in seven innings of work. Dudley gave up two hits and one run in one inning to take the loss to fall to 2-2.
Louisiana Tech was led by Williams who was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Hughes also went 1-for-3 with a run. Minnesota will be back in action when it plays Louisiana Tech at Target Field on Saturday, Mar. 27 at 1:10 p.m. That game can be heard live on WCCO (830 AM).
