She is ranked fourth among Minnesota’s all-time top performers in the all around, and is currently ranked eighth in the Big Ten in the all around. She has been the all around winner at four meets this season. Russell owns the team’s top floor score this season with a 9.925, the best individual score by a Gopher gymnast on any event this season. She has won floor at three meets, and has the top average floor score on the team. Russell has been a top performer for the Gophers on bars this season, earning two event wins on bars. Her average bars score is the best on the team, and she has been Minnesota’s top scorer on bars at nine of 12 meets this season. Russell has also won two vault titles this season, and is tied with Kendra Elm for the best vault score by a Gopher this season (9.875). The All-Big Ten honor is the second of Russell’s career after she also earned first-team honors as a junior last season.
The conference also honored gymnasts from each team with the Sportsmanship Award, and Minnesota's honoree is Alexis Russell. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These seven student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
Russell and her teammates will compete in the Big Ten Championships this afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. The conference meet will begin at 1 p.m. central and will be telecast live on the Big Ten Network.
