Minnesota Falls to Louisiana Tech 5-2

The Minnesota baseball team (8-16) lost to Louisiana Tech (12-11) 5-2 in the series finale at the Metrodome on Sunday, Mar. 28.
Minnesota was led by redshirt freshman Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) who went 3-for-4 with a double. JT Canakes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was also 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while junior Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a run.
Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) was also 1-for-4 with a run, while Andy Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) reached base twice, and was 1-for-3.
Golden Gopher starter Austin Lubinsky (LaCrosse, Wis.) took the loss to fall to 0-2, as he gave up four hits, two runs and struck out two in three innings. Phil Isaksson (Eau Claire, Wis.) gave up three hits, three runs, walked one and tied a career-high with five strikeouts in relief. Billy Soule (Hamel, Minn.) pitched 1.2 shutout innings, gave up a hit, walked one and struck out one.
Louisiana Tech starter Josh Barrett picked up the win to move to 2-1, as he gave up eight hits, two runs, walked two and struck out two in 5.2 innings of work. Mike LeBreton pitched 3.1 shutout innings, gave up two hits and struck out three to pick up the Bulldogs' first save of the year.
Minnesota got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a single run to make it 1-0. Larson got things started with a one-out double, and scored on an RBI single by Kvasnicka to give the Golden Gophers the early lead.
Will Alvis quickly evened up the game at 1-1 in the top of the second with a solo home run to left field. Clint Stubbs delivered a one-out triple, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Clint Ewing to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1.
Louisiana Tech pushed the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the top of the fifth. Mark Threlkeld put the Bulldogs up 3-1 with an RBI single, and Alex Williams and Devin Dageford each collected RBI doubles to make it 5-1.
Minnesota cut the lead to 5-2 with a single run in the bottom of the fifth. Geason led off with a single, and scored on Canakes brought him home with an RBI double to cut the Louisiana Tech lead to three runs. Henkemeyer drew a walk to make it first and second, but Louisiana Tech got Pettersen to fly out and Larson to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Threlkeld led the way for Louisiana Tech going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Alvis was also 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI, while Williams also went 1-for-4 with a run, a double and an RBI.
Minnesota will be in action next when it faces Concordia-Moorhead at the Metrodome on Wednesday, Mar. 31 at 6:35 p.m. The Golden Gophers will open Big Ten play at Purdue on Friday, Apr. 2 at 3 p.m. Minnesota will also play the Boilermakers on Saturday, Apr. 3 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 4 at 12 p.m.
