The Minnesota baseball team (2-6) lost 4-3 to Loyola Marymount (2-7) in the Dairy Queen Classic at the Metrodome on Friday, Mar. 5.

In the first game, Northwestern rallied from a 5-0 deficit to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth before falling to Oklahoma State 7-5.

The Golden Gophers were led by junior Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) who reached base in all four plate appearances, and went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double and three RBI. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) also reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a run. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also reached base twice, while Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) was 1-for-4 with a run. JT Canakes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was also 1-for-3 on the night.

Minnesota starter Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) had a strong outing, as he retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced. Rosin pitched six innings, tied a career-high with eight strikeouts, gave up two hits and one run. He retired the first nine batters he faced, but received the no-decision after Loyola Marymount tied the game in the seventh inning.

Scott Fern (Eau Claire, Wis.) took the loss, as he gave up five hits, three runs, walked one and struck out two batters in three innings. Fern's loss dropped him to 1-1.

Loyola Marymount starter Martin Viramontes had a no-decision, as he went six innings, gave up three hits, three runs, walked four and struck out eight. Chris Eusebio picked up a win to move to 1-0, as he pitched 1.2 shutout innings to close the game.

Minnesota jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Pettersen led off the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a hit-and-run single with nobody out. Kvasnicka cleared the bases with a three-run homer to center field to give the Gophers a 3-0 lead.

Loyola Marymount got a single run back in the top of the fourth to make it 3-1. Jonathan Johnson led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a ground out by Jason Barmasse and scored on an RBI ground out by Matt Koch.

The Lions tied the score at 3-3 with two runs in a bizarre top of the seventh inning. Matt Koch led off the inning with a double. Koch came around to score when Matt Lowenstein hit a chopper to the right side of the infield that got past the first and second baseman and resulted in an infield double that made the score 3-2. Lowestein stole third, and came around to score later in the inning on an RBI double by Ryan Hawthorne to tie the game.

The inning also featured a play that saw Brad Bauer strike out, reach on a wild pitch and get thrown out trying to advance to second after the Gophers caught Lowenstein in a rundown at third. Minnesota also recorded the second out on a failed suicide squeeze attempt in which Knudson tagged out Hawthorne trying to score.

Loyola Marymount took the lead 4-3 in the top of the ninth on a two-out solo home run by Alex Guthrie to left center field.

Minnesota had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth when Geason delivered a one-out double. Trip Schultz (Forest Lake, Minn.) moved Geason to third on a ground out, but Eusebio got pinch-hitter Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) to ground out to end the game.

In the eighth inning, Pettersen led off with a walk and moved to second on a one-out pass to Kvasnicka. Eusebio came back to retire Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) and Knudson to keep the game tied.

Loyola Marymount was led by Guthrie who was 2-for-4 with a home run. Lowenstein and Koch also went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
