Minnesota Falls to Oklahoma State 16-9

The Minnesota baseball team (2-7) fell to Oklahoma State (4-1) 16-9 in the Dairy Queen Classic at the Metrodome
on Saturday, Mar. 6.
In the first game of the day, Northwestern defeated Loyola Marymount 3-0. Oklahoma State is now 2-0 in the Dairy Queen Classic, while Northwestern and Loyola Marymount are 1-1.
Minnesota trailed 12-0 heading into the bottom of the third, before it clawed its way back into the game to make it 12-9. It remained a three-run lead before Oklahoma State scored four insurance runs in the top of the ninth.
The Golden Gophers had nine different players collect hits and eight different players scored a run. Sophomore Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led the way offensively going 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) also reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with two runs, while Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Oklahoma State got to Golden Gopher pitching early, as it scored eight runs and had eight hits against Minnesota starter Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) in two innings of work. Rasmussen took the loss for the Golden Gohpers to fall to 0-3. Allen Bechstein (Apple Valley, Minn.) gave up four runs in the third inning, but held the Cowboys at bay the rest of the way as he gave up seven hits and four runs in 3.2 innings. Phil Isaksson (Eau Claire, Wis.) pitched 2.1 shutout innings to begin his outing, before giving up four in the ninth.
The Cowboys got on the board first with six runs in the top of the second inning. Luis Uribe plated the first run with an infield RBI single to put Oklahoma State ahead 1-0. Dusty Harvard pushed it to 2-0 with an RBI double, and Davis Duren followed with a two-run double. Kevin David's sacrifice fly and Mark Ginther's RBI double pushed it to a 6-0 lead for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma State added six more runs in the top of the third to take a 12-0 lead. Dane Phillips and Harvard started the scoring with a pair of RBI doubles to make it 8-0. Duren added an RBI single, and David put Oklahoma State ahead 10-0 with a sacrifice fly. Tom Belza also had an RBI ground out and Nico Rosenhausler finished the scoring with an RBI single.
Minnesota answered with six runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 12-6. Schlangen plated Puhl and Abrahamson with a two-run double to move the score to 12-2. Schlangen and Pettersen each came home to score on wild pitches to cut the lead to 12-4. Geason and Sam Ryan followed with a pair of RBI singles to cut the lead down to 12-6.
The Golden Gophers scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 12-7. Pettersen and Larson each were hit by a pitch to make it first and second with no one on. Kvasnicka plated Pettersen with an RBI double to cut the Cowboys lead to 12-7. O'Shea drew a walk to load the bases, but Oklahoma State reliever Kevin Chambers struck out the next three batters to keep the lead at five runs.
Minnesota moved to within three runs at 12-9 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Geason cut the lead to 12-8 when he plated O'Shea with an RBI triple to center field. Knudson plated Geason when he scorched an RBI single through the right to make it a three-run Cowboy lead.
Oklahoma State scored four runs in the top of the ninth to make it 16-9. Uribe's three-run homer highlighted the four-run output for the Cowboys.
Chambers picked up the win in relief for Oklahoma State to move to 1-0, as he went 4.1 innings, gave up six hits, two runs and struck out six batters. Brad Propst retired all five batters he faced to collect his first save of the year.
It marked the first time the Golden Gophers have given up 20 or more hits in a game since they surrendered 21 hits to Northern Iowa on Apr. 9, 2008.
Uribe led the way offensively going 4-for-5 with a home run, three runs and four RBI. Duren went 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBI. Nine different Cowboy players had hits, and four different players scored three runs in the game.
Minnesota will wrap up the Dairy Queen Classic against Northwestern on Sunday, Mar. 7 at 3:05 p.m. That game can be heard on KLBB (1220 AM) and in the Gold Zone. Loyola Marymount and Oklahoma State will play the first game at 11 a.m.
