The Minnesota baseball team (12-18, 2-2) had its three-game winning streak snapped as it fell to Michigan State (21-5, 3-1) 5-3 in the series opener at the Metrodome on Friday, Apr. 9.

With the win, the Spartans have now won 15 of their last 16 games. The victory also snapped a seven-game winning streak by Minnesota over Michigan State.

The Golden Gophers were led by Trip Schultz (Forest Lake, Minn.) who went 3-for-3 a double and two RBI. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) each went 2-for-5 on the night. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) also reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a run, while Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) was 1-for-4 with a run.

Minnesota starter Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) took the loss to fall to 2-3, as he pitched seven innings, gave up 10 hits, five runs, did not walk a batter and struck out six. Rosin has walked only two batters in 49.1 innings and has only walked a batter in one of his eight starts this year. Junior reliever Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) retired all six batters he faced on the night.

Michigan State starter A.J. Achter picked up the win to move to 4-1, as he gave up 11 hits, three runs, one walk and struck out five batters in six innings. Trey Popp pitched 1.2 shutout innings of relief, and Kurtis Frymier retired all four batters he faced to pick up his fifth save.

The Spartans got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second on a two-run double by Torsten Boss that made it 2-0.

Minnesota had a chance to cut into the lead when Knudson reached third on a double and an error. Puhl was hit by a pitch to make it first and third, but Achter struck out O'Shea and got Geason to ground into a double play to keep the Spartans ahead 2-0.

The Golden Gophers had another chance in the bottom of the third when Trip Schultz doubled with one out, and Pettersen followed with a two-out single. Michigan State right fielder Eli Boike threw out Schultz at the plate to keep the Gophers off the board for a second straight inning.

The Golden Gophers finally broke through with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Puhl got things started with a two-out single, and moved up on an O'Shea single up the middle. Geason drove in Puhl with an RBI single to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1. After a Henkemeyer walk loaded the bases, Schultz had his third hit of the day on a two-run single that plated O'Shea and Geason to give Minnesota a 3-2 lead.

Michigan State answered back with three runs in the top of the seventh to move ahead 5-3. Rosin retired the first two batters, but Bo Felt reached when he was hit by a pitch. Felt moved to second on a wild pitch, and pinch-runner Jordan Keur came around to score on an RBI double by Andy Johnson to tie the game at 3-3. Eli Boike followed with an opposite-field home run to put the Spartans back ahead at 5-3. It appeared as if Michigan State would add another run Jonathan Roof doubled to right field, but Kvasnicka made a nice throw to the cut off man O'Shea who threw out Brandon Eckerle at the plate to end the inning. The Golden Gophers hit into two double plays and stranded 10 runners on the night.

Michigan State was led by Boike who went 2-for-5 with a home run, a run and two RBI. Boss finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Johnson was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI.

Minnesota will resume the series with the Spartans on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 2:05 p.m. and will wrap up the series on Sunday, Apr. 11 at 1:05 p.m. Both games can be heard live on KLBB (1220 AM) and in the Gold Zone.
