Puga Leads Gophers At Lady Buckeye

The University of Minnesota women’s golf team is in a tie for seventh place after 36 holes at the 2010 Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus. The Gophers opened with a combined score of 326 but rebounded with a 321 in the second round and are tied with the University of Wisconsin entering the third and final round.

Junior Teresa Puga has led the Gophers all season and today it was no different, as she carded rounds of 79 and 76 and is in a three-way tie for fifth place. Puga is looking to capture her sixth top-10 finish of the season.

Fellow junior Samantha Sommers contributed rounds of 78 and 82 for a 36-hole score of 160 and is in a nine-way tie for 16th place. Senior Christine Herzog turned in a score of 166 and is in a tie for 43rd place while Michele Edlin and Mary Narzisi are in a tie for 51st and 55th place, respectively. True freshman Jackie Shepherd carded rounds of 89 and 88 and is alone in 68th place.

The host Ohio State Buckeyes lead the invite with a score of 615 followed by Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa State and Indiana. The Gophers are ahead of Big Ten foes Illinois (9th), Iowa (10th) and Penn State (11th). Kelsey Lindenschmidt of Northwestern is the medalist with 18 holes remaining after posting rounds of 74 and 77.
