This past weekend, 17 University of Minnesota swimmers took part in the Relay for Life event on campus. The event took place at the U of M Field House and went on from 6 pm Friday until 6 am Saturday. Due to the large amount of swimmers, two teams within the University of Minnesota swimming and diving team were created. During this time, one person from each team had to be walking around the track. In total, the swimmers raised over $645 for the American Cancer Society.
During the course of the 12 hours, there were many different events. The swimmers took part in the traditions of celebrating, remembering, and fighting back that occur at all Relay for Life events across the nation. The American Cancer Society stresses that the Relay for Life is not just a fundraiser; as senior Corina Hopkins-Vacca said, “The relay wasn't just about individuals fighting cancer, it was about thousands of people who were all on the exact same page. I felt a huge sense of camaraderie.”
Junior Molly Belk stated, “Relay for Life is an awesome opportunity to give to a cause that effects everyone. It also created a stronger bond within the University community and our own swimming and diving team.” The swimmers enjoyed doing the Relay for Life as a team due to the bonding and the fact that they felt like they were making a difference. The swimmers hope to continue participating in Relay for Life in the future.
