Gophers in Seventh After Day One

Junior Samantha Sommers has put together a career season and she is keeping that going by carding a pair of one-over par 73's on day one and will head into Saturday in a tie for eighth place. Sommers came into the championships with a career stroke average of 78.71 but has played this season to a career-low 76.48 stroke average, second lowest on the team.
Teresa Puga, who has led the Gophers in many of the tournaments this season and has the team's lowest stroke average, is in a tie for 18th place after posting rounds of 75-74 (149). Michele Edlin carded two scores lower than her season average (76-77) and is in a tie for 31st place.
Mary Narzisi is in a tie for 41st place with a 36-hole score of 155 (82-73) while Christine Herzog is in 57th and freshman Jackie Shepherd sits alone in 65th place.
The Purdue Boilermakers, the winner of two of the last three Big Ten Championships, leads the event by 15 strokes over Michigan State. Ohio State is in second followed by Wisconsin, Northwestern and Indiana. Purdue came into the Championships as the eighth ranked team in the nation according to the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
Michigan's Ashley Bauer set a Big Ten and tied the course record with a seven-under 65 in the second round and leads the championships by one stroke over Laura Kueny of Michigan State and Maude-Aimee LeBlanc of Purdue.
