The NCAA today announced today that University of Minnesota junior Teresa Puga has been awarded one of nine individual spots at the Women's Regional Golf Tournament, played May 6-8 at three sites across the country. Puga will represent the Gophers in the West Regional at Stanford Golf Course near the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

Puga, an A Coruña, Spain native (Blume HS), will be the first Golden Gopher to take part in the NCAA's since the 2000-01 squad qualified for the postseason. She holds virtually every individual scoring record at Minnesota, including lowest fall season average (74.07 - 2008) and lowest career stroke average (currently at 76.09). Former Gopher Kate Hughes (1985-89) held the old record until this spring with a career mark of 77.57.

Puga will more than likely add lowest spring average and lowest single-season average to the list, as she will enter the West Regional with a 74.77 spring stroke average and a season average of 75.08, both Gopher records.

This season has been a career year for Puga, as she has captured two Big Ten Conference Player of the Week awards (Feb. 24 & March 25) and established the program's second lowest 72-hole tournament score with a 297 this past weekend in Madison. She played in all 11 tournaments this season for Minnesota and garnered seven top-10 finishes and eight top-20 finishes. The team counted 32 of the 34 rounds the junior played this season.

Each regional site will qualify eight teams and two other individuals not on the top eight teams to the NCAA national championship May 18-21 at Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
