Gophers Climb to Fifth in Directors' Cup

Buoyed by a strong close to the winter sports season, Minnesota moved up two places to rank fifth in the final winter Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings released April 29th with 681.75 points.

The Gophers totaled 487.75 points during winter-sports season, the third-best total in the country, after placing third in women's ice hockey, seventh in both men's gymnastics and wrestling, eighth in men's track and field, 12th in women's swimming, 14th in men's swimming, 19th in women's gymnastics, 33rd in men's basketball and 39th in women's track and field.

Stanford maintained its overall lead in the standings and enters the spring with 962.00 points. Ohio State is second with 813.50 points and Penn State is third with 726.80 points as six Big Ten programs grabbed spots in the top 20.

Points are accumulated based on performances in NCAA tournament competition.

Each sport is scored on a scale of 25-100 with the national champion receiving 100 points, the runner-up getting 90 points and each participating team receiving a minimum of 25 points for qualifying.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports - seven women's and seven men's. The Gophers' winter total of 380.25 points was the fifth-highest of all Division I schools.

The first Spring Division I standings will be released Thursday, June 3, with the final standings of the year slated to be announced on July 1.
