Minnesota to Honor 1960 Team on May 8

The Minnesota baseball program will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1960 National Championship team prior to the second game of the series against Michigan on May 8 at 2:05 p.m. in the Metrodome.
Along with the 1960 National Championship team, the Minnesota baseball program will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1970 Big Ten Championship team and the 10th anniversary of the 2000 Big Ten Championship team.
The 1960 team won the program's second National Title in a season where the Golden Gophers went 34-7-1. Minnesota also went 12-2-1 in conference play on its way to winning it third straight Big Ten title. The Golden Gophers went 5-1 on their way to winning the College World Series, including a dramatic rally against USC in a 12-11 victory in the third game of the CWS.
Minnesota had four players named to the College World Series All-Tournament team, as second baseman John Erickson, third baseman Cal Rolloff, shortstop Dave Pfelpsen and pitcher Bob Wasko claimed the honors. Erickson was also named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Jim Rantz also provided a historical performance for the Gophers, as he pitched 10.0 innings in a 2-1 victory over USC in the championship game.
The 1970 team claimed the program's third straight Big Ten Championship in a season where Minnesota went 34-16. The Golden Gophers went 15-3 in conference play on the way to the Big Ten title. Minnesota had three players named First-Team All-Big Ten as second baseman Bob Schnietz, outfielder John Peterson and catcher Phil Flodin claimed the honors.
In 2000, Minnesota went 38-24 as it started a run of winning four Big Ten regular-season titles in five years. The Golden Gophers finished 20-8 in Big Ten play on its way to the conference title. Minnesota had seven players receive All-Big Ten honors, as pitcher Mike Kobow (First-Team), third baseman Jack Hannahan (Second-Team), first baseman Josh Holthaus (Second-Team), pitcher Ben Birk (Third-Team), designated hitter Luke Appert (Third-Team), outfielder Scott Howard (Third-Team) and Rick Brousseau (Third-Team) all claimed the honors.
