Manheim, Pa. - University of Minnesota wrestling alum Dalen Wasmund was honored recently (May 24) by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) as the National High School Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year.
Wasmund is currently coaching at Apple Valley High School, where he has been for 28 years. The Apple Valley Eagles won the Minnesota AAA State Championship in 2010, the school's 18th since Wasmund has been with the program.
Wasmund was a Minnesota letterwinner from 1979-82, earning All-America honors in 1981. In his junior season he placed fourth at 134, becoming the Golden Gophers 34th All-American. He was also a part of teams that placed third in the Big Ten twice, and second in the conference twice. Two-times in his tenure the Golden Gophers finished in the top-10 at the NCAA tournament, including a fifth place finish at the National Championships in 1980.
After his time as a wrestler for the Golden Gophers, Wasmund went on to make the U.S. World Team in Greco-Roman in 1985, and was a Greco-Roman National Champion in 1986. He also had a stint back with the University of Minnesota on the coaching staff.
Wasmund was one of eight regional winners for Assistant Coach of the Year, before surpassing the competition to gain National Honors.
