University of Minnesota men's head gymnastics coach Mike Burns has announced the signing of John Scallon (Nashville, Tenn.) to National Letters of Intent. Scallon will be a freshman in the Gopher gymnastics program next season.
"John Scallon will be an immediate impact player here at Minnesota," Burns said. "One of the most amazing things about John is the fact that this is only his third year of doing gymnastics. It boggles my mind that he is able to do what he can do with such a short amount of time in the sport. I think John Scallon will be a real pleasant surprise to the collegiate gymnastics program in the United States."
Scallon is a graduate of Rolling Meadows (Ill.) High School. He recently won the Illinois State High School pommel horse championship with a 9.75 score. He is also a two-time conference champion on the horse. Scallon won the sectional title earlier this season. He was a fourth-place finisher at the state championships back in 2009.
Scallon joins a long list of highly-decorated gymnasts who have won the Illinois State High School pommel horse championship. Burns mentioned former NCAA greats such as Ted Marcy, Dave Stoldt, Chuck Schieble and Doug Kieso and hopes Scallon can continue that tradition.
