Gabriele Anderson says she became passionate about running as a seventh- and eighth-grader in Perham, Minn.

But her true love for the sport became evident in the past year. Even being diagnosed with cancer in April 2009 was only a temporary setback for Anderson.

"I don't know what the future holds for me, so I am going to enjoy the time I have now," Anderson said. "Right now I am healthy and right now I am enjoying my life."

She also is running better than ever. Anderson took second place in both the 1,500- and 800-meter runs at the Big Ten meet on May 16 in Bloomington, Ind.

She and 23 Gophers teammates will compete Thursday through Saturday in the West preliminary round of the NCAA meet in Austin, Texas. The top 12 individuals in each event advance to the NCAA Championships June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.
